Few hours ago, WordPress has released its 5.8 Update.

Then, we suddenly wondered:

  • Will this Update make our Site Faster?

To answer this question we have Updated our Test Site and Measured its Page Speed.

  • Before and After Updating it.

Is it Faster than version 5.7?

Let’s find it out.

In case you don’t know, in this Diary we talk about How we are building this Site: our SEO strategy, Traffic…

This Post will be divided into 2 different Parts:

1. Is WordPress 5.8 faster than 5.7?

2. Our Google Analytics results.

Let’s begin:

1. Is WordPress 5.8 faster than 5.7?

Our Test Site is a 200 paragraph Page with a 7 mb Image.

  • We created the text with Loren Ipsum.

We use this Structure in order to have a “representative” Page.

We use Twenty Twenty-One Theme.

Our Test Site.

First, we have measured our Test Site Speed, with WordPress 5.7 installed.

  • These will be our Benchmark results.

We have used Google Chrome’s Lighthouse Tool to measure Page Speed.

Let’s see the results:

Page Speed Results – Benchmark: WordPress 5.7

Benchmark Overall Results.

Benchmark Performance Results.

Benchmark Opportunities.

Then, we have Updated WordPress to 5.8 version and measured the Page Speed again.

Let’s see the results:

Page Speed Results – WordPress 5.8

WordPress 5.8 installed – Overall Results.

WordPress 5.8 installed – Performance Results.

WordPress 5.8 installed – Opportunities.

Now, let’s compare the results obtained.

Is WordPress 5.8 faster?

Yes, definitely.

However, the improvement in Page Speed that you must expect should be reduced.

What improvements in Page Speed did we experience?

  • First Contentful Paint: From 2.4 to 2.3 s: – 0.1 seconds.
  • Speed Index: From 2.4 to 2.3 s: – 0.1 seconds.
  • Largest Contentful Paint: From 2.6 to 2.4 s: – 0.2 seconds.
  • Time to Interactive: From 2.5 to 2.4 s: – 0.1 seconds.
  • Total Blocking Time: From 30 ms to 20 ms: – 10 ms.

Now, Google is using Page Experience as a Ranking Factor.

This means that any improvement in Page Speed should be welcomed.

These small variations in Page Speed could make the difference between being considered a Need Improvement or a Good Site.

Once you have tried everything, reducing your LCP by 0.2 seconds is difficult.

That is why you should give this Update a try.

  • Once you have make sure all your Plugins are compatible.

Now, let’s see our current traffic:

2. Our Google Analytics results.

Our Google Search Console results.

As you can see, it seems that our numbers are recovering again.

  • After the June Google Core Update.

Our traffic has been cut in half. And it hurts.

However, summer is not a good time for our Traffic.

We’ll have to wait until September to see where we are exactly right now.

As always:

  • Thanks for being there.
