You want to change a certain thing of your Website, and someone suggests you to edit a php file.

  • The problem is: you have no idea about how to do it, you don’t know whether you have the right software… And you are extremely afraid of “touching” something that would destroy your site.

If this is your problem (it was ours some weeks ago) this Post is meant for you.

Today we’ll explain how to modify a php file easily without any software at all.

In case you don’t know, in this section we talk about How we are building this Website: our SEO strategy, Theme and Plugins we use, our Real Results (Pageviews and Users we have)…

Hence, this Post will be divided into 2 parts:

1. How to edit a php file easily without any additional software needed.

2. Today’s Google Analytics report with our daily results: Pageviews and Users.

Let’s begin:

1. How to edit a php file easily without any additional software needed.

When we started our website, we used a php editor (NetBeans) for editing any php minor file we wanted.

As you know, we don’t know any programming; we just do the “basics”:

  • Set the time to 300 at wp-confing.php since our theme (KLEO) required it.
    • If you are interested about this Theme, we wrote a whole Post about our experience with it; the “Our experience with KLEO” Post.
  • Edit the bp-custom.php BuddyPress file.
  • No much else, really.

Edit these php files with an Editor was a waste of time. We had to:

  • Download the file.
  • Create a copy.
  • Edit it.
  • Try it.
  • If it didn’t worked, try again.
  • etc, etc…

How are we editing these php files now?

We discovered a new way (we felt a bit dumb for not having discovered it before, really).

For example, imagine we want to set our time limit to 300 (we would need to edit our “wp-config.php” file):

1. Enter your cPanel File Manager and identify the file you want to edit:

In this case, we need to edit the “wp-config.php” file.

2. Do a right click on this file:

You’ll see that there are different options.

You should download the file before editing it, in case you “modify” something you didn’t have to.

3. Select the Edit option:

Now, you are inside this file, without needing any software, editor…

4. Add or remove the code you need.

In this case, we simply add the “set_time_limit(300);” code.

5. Save the file and that is all.

You need to do nothing else.

The modifications are applied immediately, so you’ll be able to work much faster than downloading, editing and uploading files.

This way of editing php files saved a ton of time to us and inexplicably, we found it for ourselves. Nobody explained this method on Internet.

  • That is why we wanted to share this with you, so you don’t waste as much time as we did.

2. Today’s Google Analytics report with our daily results: Pageviews and Users.

Our website has been 100% active for 2 months and 26 days.

Next week, well publish a 3 months special, sharing with you:

  • An overall analysis of the Website.
  • The main Queries our website receives.
  • The pages that are receiving more traffic.
    • We’ll analyze which Meta and Title descriptions these pages have so we can assess their effectiveness.
  • Our Google Search Console data.

We’ll compare the evolution with the “2 months special” Post we published almost a month ago.

Now, let’s see how are we doing:

Users:

As you can appreciate at the Post’s top image, these last 2 days (since it is end of July, we are taking some days off) we have had 16 users.

Pageviews:

Regarding pageviews, our website had 19 unique Pageviews.

These days are difficult: holidays, summer… but that shouldn’t be an excuse: our numbers must improve.

As you know, we have a strict “no promotion” strategy that has help us to define our content.

  • Sometimes we feel the urge of promoting it, but it would be counter-productive.
    • On our previously mentioned “2 months special” we explained why we follow this strategy.
  • By now, we’ll maintain this strategy no matter what our numbers look like.

Our website is pretty young so, we are not worried by now.

As always, thanks for being there.
