Google Fonts have lots of interesting typefaces but… Many people wonder if they can slow down their Site.

Today, we’ll answer this question.

Last week, we analyzed if Yoast slows down WordPress very precisely.

We are so happy with the result that we’ll test different Plugins, Themes, etc in the same way.

We have followed the same procedure with Google Fonts:

  • We have created a New Site  and we have tested its speed to have a Reference.
  • We have installed and used Google Fonts everywhere (Headings, Body, etc ) in that same Site.
  • We have compared the Results.

Keep reading and you will finally discover if Google Fonts really slow down WordPress.

In case you don’t know, in this section we talk about How we are building this Website: our SEO strategy, Theme and Plugins we use, our Real Results (Pageviews and Users we have)…

As usual, this Post will be divided into 2 different parts:

1. Do Google Fonts slow down WordPress?

2. Our Today’s Google Analytics report: Users and Pageviews we have.

Let’s begin:

1. Do Google Fonts slow down WordPress?

First of all, we have created a New Site from scratch locally (it is installed in your computer, rather than in your Hosting space).

  • In this way, we can do whatever we want without compromising our Site (this Site).

New Site created.

We have added, to the WordPress sample Post:

  • A 7 mb image.
  • 200 paragraphs generated with Loren Ipsum.

We have used the “Arial” Font.

This Site has nothing else: No Plugins… Just the default “twenty twenty” WordPress Theme installed.

Then, we have tested its Speed with Google Chrome’s Audit Tool:

Google Chrome Audit Tool results – Font used: “Arial” .

This is our Reference.

We have focused on this “Estimated savings” variables since, for this study, they provide much more valuable information than “Performance variables”.

Then, we have Installed the “Google Fonts Typography” Plugin.

  • It was the most popular one.

Google Fonts Typography Plugin.

Next, we have used “Crimson Text” typography for all our Site (Headings, Body, etc).

  • We love this particular typography.

New Site with Google Fonts.

Then, we have Audited its Performance again with Google Chrome’s tool:

Google Chrome Audit Tool results – Font used: “Arial” .

Let’s compare the results we obtained:

  • Eliminate render-blocking resources: +0.4 s.
  • Remove unused CSS: +0.15 s.
  • Properly size images: -0.15 s.
  • Serve images in next-gen formats: 0 s.
  • Efficiently encode images: 0 s.

Do Google Fonts slow down WordPress?

As we observed when we analyzed Yoast, these Audit results present some type of variability, around 0.05 to 0.1 seconds.

  • The variable “Properly size images” got better results.

However, the “Render-blocking resources” variable has increased by 0.4 seconds.

These results prove that yes, Google Fonts slow down WordPress.

But, as we mentioned in our Yoast Post,:

  • If you have a fast Site with few light Plugins, you should not worry about using Google Fonts.
  • On the other hand, if you are trying to improve your Site’s speed, you should think about using a regular Font and forget about Google Fonts.

On our Site (Consuunt) we had to get rid of Google Fonts because we needed to increase our Page Speed.

* If you are interested in how we increased our Page Speed from 66 to 93 (PageSpeed Insights results) visit our “Increase your Page Speed” Page.

  • There we also talk about why we had to forget about Google Fonts and what results we obtained.

2. Our Today’s Google Analytics report: Users and Pageviews we have.

This last week has been a “bad week”.

  • This May, we are having good weeks followed by bad weeks…

Users:

As you can appreciate at the Post’s top image, we are struggling to maintain 1,000 users per week.

Pageviews:

We currently have 6,319 Page Views per month.

We hope to improve these results this week, and get out of the “bad loop”.

As always: Thanks for being there.
